ANTONY SZMIEREK - ANGIE’S WEDDING
Antony Szmierek may just be the people’s poet laureate of Manchester.
Retrospective with a clouding feeling of nostalgia - Antony Szmierek has released his final single before the release of his debut album ‘Service Station At The End Of The Universe’.
Documenting the wedding day of Angie and her other half, Szmierek has offered a completely new depth to his composition and lyricism in his latest track - with a feeling of contemplation looming amidst the classic, up-beat electronic sounds we can always expect from Szmierek. ‘Angie’s Wedding’ pays tribute to a fictional wedding party where all the characters from the album unite in joyful unison.
Danceable in its own right, yet wildly different to previous single ‘The Great Pyramid Of Stockport’ - ‘Angie’s Wedding’ offers a completely new profile to the sound of Szmierek, with a deeper, more emotional feeling bringing us closer to the artist than ever. Whilst conventional popular music, involving similar synth sounds to those that Szmierek uses, can often comment on politics and social issues - there is something extremely hard-hitting and powerful about Szmierek’s monotone approach to his spoken-word poetry, that juxtaposes the sounds behind his lyrics, reminiscent of 90s house music. Being the king of taking us to places at the wrong time of year, in classic Szmierek style, the beat takes us to the beaches of Ibiza (despite being released in January).
With the lyrics grounding us in a somehow nostalgic present of a UK motorway, Antony will always find beauty in the monotonous and ordinary.
“The album was always going to end at a wedding or a wake, and I went with the most positive option. Inspired by motorway graffiti, a track that takes us to a place where ‘the doers and the dreamers’ of the world live forever. All recorded in one continuous take, with the mistakes left in.”
Releasing the single with a b-side of ‘Angie’s Wedding (Smez’s Edit)’, the track becomes even more danceable and upbeat than the original song - with a more up-beat feeling, cleverly being weary not to dismiss the retrospective reflection that still lingers in the background of his lyrics.
With an already extensive back catalogue of well-known and equally loved tracks under his sleeve - it’s almost impossible Szmierek has yet to release a complete body of work, however on the 28th February this will change with the release of his debut album ‘Service Station At The End Of The Universe’. Featuring tracks such as ‘Rafters’, ‘Yoga Teacher’ and ‘The Great Pyramid Of Stockport’ - the record has already shown extreme variety and potential through its single releases - making fans even more excited for the full album.
Hitting the road this Spring, Szmierek is going on a UK and European tour in support of his new album - taking on venues like the incredible Albert Hall in Manchester and The Leadmill in Sheffield, this tour is not one to miss. With limited tickets available, you would be a fool to miss Manchester’s finest wordsmith.
